Trail of Tears Group Newsletter December 2002 Ozark Chapter - Sierra Club Cape Girardeau |
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Solstice Seasonal
Social (please note both
alliteration and political correctness!)
Friday December 13th (Oh Lucky Day!) at 7:00 p.m. This will be held
at the home of Brian and Eve Alworth 2444 Glenridge in Cape. From Lexington and
Perryville Intersection: Head into town, turn west on Westwood (first right),
then take second right onto Glenridge. Their house is at the end on the corner
of Randal and on right. Please bring a dish to serve several, and your choice
of beverage(s).
Executive Committee
Meeting:
Thursday January 23rd
After you have enjoyed the season and New Year, please join us at the
first Executive Committee of the New Year to plan our activities for 2003. This
will be at the home of Bob Zeller, 402, N. Frederick in Cape and will start at
6:30 p.m. (NOT a pot-luck).
Eagle Days:
Saturday February 1st Our
first outing of the New Year is already scheduled. We will meet at the Cape
Public Library at 8:30 a.m. and car-pool out to Mingo and Duck Creek for the bi-annual Eagle
Days celebration to view Eagles (and otters, and beavers, and whatever else
crosses or comes near our paths). Please bring lunch and warm clothing. Although
it is primarily a driving jaunt, we will probably take short walks to get better
views of the bird people.
For updates, don’t forget
to check the Trail of Tears web site:
http://missouri.sierraclub.org/trailoftears/ and go to the Programs Page.
If you have email, and are not receiving notices regarding Trail of Tears activities, but would like to, please contact Alan Journet at ajournet@biology.semo.edu
ELECTION RESULTS:
Although the Federal
election results were unfortunate, the Trail of Tears Election went off smoothly. The
incoming 2003
Trail of Tears elected Executive Committee members are: Brian Alworth and Bob
Zeller returning to complete their two year cycles, re-elected member Frank
Dietiker, and newly elected member Tom Draper.
We’d like to thank all the candidates for running, and express the hope that
those not elected to the Executive Committee will volunteer to contribute their
talents as appointed ExComm members to serve the Group.
CONSERVATION REPORT
(Alan Journet):
In case you missed the news - Kinder-Morgan withdrew its application to
construct a polluting power plant in Cape County and no longer threatens to
invade our air. Meanwhile Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources has slowed
the New Madrid Floodway Project by demanding that the Corps of Engineers address
the issues raised by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service concerning wetland
habitat loss.
