Joint Action Committee

Conservation Committee

The Sierra Club has long-term priority conservation campaigns:

  • End Commercial Logging
  • Wildlands
  • Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation/Water Quality

Sierra Club priority programs also work on:

  • Global Warming
  • Human Rights and the Environment
  • Global Population Stabilization
  • Responsible Trade

Volunteers are needed to lead or participate in educational and political efforts on these national Sierra Club campaigns and programs. Volunteers are also needed to lead local environmental efforts (such as last year's recycling ballot issue, Missouri River Master Manual issue) as the need arises. The Joint Action Committee, led by the Conservation Chair meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Discovery Center, the Missouri Department of Conservation's new Urban Conservation Campus, 4750 Troost, Kansas City, MO.


Publicity Committee

Manages email list, send out action alerts, send meeting and special activity announcement to newspapers via e-mail/fax. Need help with all these activities.


Membership Committee

  • A volunteer is needed to computer print welcome postcards each month to be mailed to new members. These postcards announce the upcoming general meeting.
  • A volunteer is needed each month at the general meetings to welcome folks as they arrive (assist them with sign-in and name tags) and to invite visitors to join Sierra Club.
  • Volunteers are needed at various tabling events throughout the year.


Fundraising Committee

The chair oversees major fundraisers and the recruitment of volunteers.
Santa Caligon Days (lemonade stand) is in September.

  • Help call people to staff shifts at each event.
  • Lead a shift at Santi Caligon Days.
  • Sell Sierra Club Calendars at work or elsewhere October - December.
  • Lead new Newsletter Sponsorship program.
  • Help plan a new T-shirt and arrange to get them printed at a reasonable cost, with a design that would appeal and sell.


Newsletter Committee

The Heartland Sierran is produced on a bi-monthly basis.

  • Volunteers can contribute by: writing articles; identifying potential authors and/or subject matter of articles; providing or finding sources for pertinent photos; proofreading the newsletter.


Newsletter Mailing Party

Works with small groups to place labels and sort the newsletters for mailing.


Newsletter Distribution

Meets every two months

The newsletter is distributed to libraries and other locations all over the KC metro area every two months. Volunteers are needed to distribute in particular geographic areas.

  • Someone is also needed to mail or deliver the newsletters to those who are distributing them to libraries (would need to be at the mailing party - see below)


Volunteer Coordinator

Keeps track of member contacts and identify and recruit volunteers for various activities.


Hospitality Committee

Recruit volunteers to bring snacks to general meetings and bring cups and other supplies to each meeting.


Outings Committee

Plan and implement the groups various outings throughout the year: hikes, backpacking, bicycling, gastro outings, canoeing, etc. (see outings brochure)

Transportation Committee

The Transportation Committee collaborates with activists from the Kanza Group and other like-minded organizations to act as the "Metropolitan Coalition for Sensible Transportation" (MCST). The members identify key transportation and development projects and issues in the Kansas City area, and bring an environmental perspective to these projects and issues through public comments and public information efforts. They work to reduce inefficient "urban sprawl" development through our efforts to reduce reliance on single-occupant motor vehicles; to support public transit, walking, and cycling; to advocate "smart growth" policies and strategies to guide regional development; and to protect watersheds.


Program Committee

Volunteer opportunities include: suggesting program topics; helping to arrange for programs; sending "thank-you" notes to program presenters; helping to greet the presenter and setting up any special equipment for the program (first Tuesday of each month) , i.e. VCR, screen, etc.
