Ozark Chapter now publishing  RSS News Feed
Cheryl Hammond, Ozark Chapter webmaster

The Ozark Chapter has joined the many thousands of web publishers producing RSS news feeds. This means that  you can easily keep up to date on Missouri environmental news stories though your personal RSS news reader. For the last several years, the Ozark Chapter has kept a list of news links to environmental stories published by Missouri news sources or about Missouri.  Now you can keep up-to-date with those stories as you work at your PC.

What is RSS? Just as you can click on your email reader, such as Outlook,  to read new email messages, you can also click on your RSS reader to read new headlines from RSS news feeds that you subscribe to.  In addition, just as you need an email program on your computer to download email, you need an RSS reader to download news feeds from your favorite publishers. Depending on the RSS reader, you can set options on how often to check for new headlines, what type of notification you want, how long the headlines should remain in your reader,  and so on. The process is very similar to receiving email, except no spam.

Getting an RSS news reader: RSS Compendium gives a long list of news readers you can download and use. For example, RSS Reader is an example of the many free readers available. Some browsers, such as Mozilla FireFox have an RSS reader built-in and the coming Internet Explorer version 7 will have this capability. Stand-alone RSS readers means you can check for news without opening your browser. However, the future will bring more and more desktop applications with built-in RSS readers.

More RSS feeds: Besides the Ozark Chapter news feed, you can add as many news feeds as you wish to your news reader set-up. In fact, a news reader is really an "aggregator" whose purpose to to aggregate news from different news feeds into one easy to manage list. This saves you from the task of checking different sources for news. Your favorite news site may already have an RSS feed available. For example, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch offers RSS feeds by category. You can select Rams News, Best of Entertainment, etc. Look on your favorite sites for icons similar to this. [XML] Also, sites such as syndic8.com allow you to search for RSS feeds of interest.

Get started! Click on [XML] now. Just add the URL in the address bar to your RSS setup.

Note to webmasters:  If you publish a Missouri environmental interest website, you may also want to add this feed to your website.  Contact webmaster@missouri.sierraclub.org if you need assistance.
