SIERRA CLUB vs KCP&L
Big win for Kansas City area residents.
Iatan II not a done deal!
Administrative Hearing Commission denies motion to dismiss, orders
KCPL to provide documents and denies request to throw out permit appeal.
Kansas City, MO – In a big win for the Sierra Club and Kansas City Area residents,
Missouri’s Administrative Hearing Commission issued an order today denying KCPL’s
motion to dismiss and ordered KCPL to provide discovery documents requested
by Sierra Club concerning Iatan I operations.
Over KCPL’s strong objections, the Court bumped the trial to March 2007, ordered
KCPL to turn over documents sought regarding potential violations at their existing
Iatan I plant, and denied KCPL’s request to throw out Sierra Club’s appeal of
their PSD permit for Iatan II. “All great news for the people of Kansas City
and a strong indication that the judge takes our allegations seriously and is
committed to having a full blown hearing on all the issues in six months” said
Bruce Nilles of Sierra Club’s Midwest Clean Air and Energy Campaign. "We
hope this will cause KCPL to revisit their proposed power plant and consider
cleaner, safer alternatives to building a massive, outdated coal-fired power
plant."
“Iatan II is NOT A DONE DEAL as KCPL has been claiming for months. Further proof
mounts each day that energy efficiency and conservation are the cleanest, cheapest
and smartest ways for our community to meet its energy needs in the 21st Century”
said Melissa Blakley of Missouri’s Ozark Chapter Sierra Club.
